Morrissey Saint Louis reviews
The Best in the WEST
I absolutely loved this concert! From the beginning, upon entering the venue at 6:00 p.m., we get treated to listening to a tuba concerto through the loudspeakers. It added a nice touch while those of us within the first 20 at the head of the cue ran to claim our spots at the front of the stage railing!
From there (7:00 p.m.), it was magnificent talking to others about our excitement and love for MOZ, while waiting for Interpol to play. The audience was treated to songs like, “Paper Boy” by the Marvelettes, “Moon Over Michigan” by James Maker, “Piss Factory” by Patti Smith, and many others via the PA system.
Interpol come on stage remarkably dressed at 7:30 p.m.. They light up the stage and the crowd sing along to their songs. They fill up the Bill Graham Civic with energy and help make this a memorable night! Thank you, Interpol.
The intermission videos play in the backdrop as crew unload Interpol’s instruments offstage and prepare for Morrissey and the band. We continue to marvel at watching an old clip of Bowie singing about The Jean Genie and Mon Laferte pouring her heart out regarding su falta de querer, Vince Taylor reminding us there’s gonna be a “whole lotta twist in’ tonight!” And many other fantastic video clips! This night is already SPLENDID.
Alas! It is 8:59 p.m.! And Lip Synca dramatically exclaims she LOVES being “me.” And doesn’t know where she’ll go: maybe up? Maybe down? And if you don’t like her, you can get right on out of there! She’s a STAR. And then BLACK. Fog fills the air and a video of our dear James Baldwin appears on the backdrop in repetitive motion as if he’s got something very important he wants to convey and suddenly appear Morrissey, Mando, Boz, Jessie, Matt, and a keyboard player (you will forgive me as your name escapes me at this hour I am writing this review. 4 a.m.).
Morrissey yells: HOW ARE THINGS ON THE WEST COAST? (a lyric from Interpol!) and the crowd goes WILD! Morrissey starts the set with The SMITHS’ “Panic.” It instantly becomes a magical, mystical night! Too bad this wasn’t a live recording! Shows like these MUST be captured FOREVER on video as a testament to impeccable music that was played on that 3rd of October, two thousand and nineteen.
We sing along with our MOZ to songs such as, “Wedding Bell Blues,“ “Home is a Question Mark,” “Seasick, Yet Still Docked,” “Back on the Chain Gang,” “Lady Will Power” and the closer of the night, “How Soon is Now?”
I was stood at the front-left of the stage with not one person in front of me. I had brought a gift to hand to Morrissey but each time Morrissey came to our side and reached out to shake hands, I would extend my gift out and security, like high school bullies, would threaten to snatch my symbol of gratitude for my MOZ. Never mind. It will be another night, another time to light Moz’s face with “The Day the World Turned Day-Glo” seven inch on Art-I-ficial records. It’s ok. I continue to enjoy my night.
Friends, I encourage you to experience this concert. To experience Morrissey live is like no other. Be careful and do not fall into the traps if the nay-sayers. Everyone will have their own opinion of this show, and some have followed into negativity and believe negative things that aren’t true.
Thank you to Morrissey, his band, Interpol, and venue staff who were kind to us in line. I got to the line at 6:00 a.m. and it was worth every minute! I was the 19th person in line and ya devotees took care of one another. Thank you, friends.
Love to all.
